Tiafoe Starts off with a Win over Wu

Following his victory in Halle last month, Tiafoe established himself as one of the dark horses for this tournament.

He is up and running, even if his straight sets’ victory over his first round opponent, Yibing Wu of China, the world number 62. was not the most convincing performance of the American’s career.

Unforced errors from both men early in the first set led to a service break apiece, but, although further break points were created, none were taken, and it meant a tie-break.

Taifoe took it without being unduly pressed.

Yu did have a break point midway through the second set, but his inability to convert it cost him dear when he was the one to drop his serve, and the American was then two sets to the good.

The third set was notable for the difficulty both men had in holding serve, but Tiafoe won it, and the match, because of his ability to drop his serve less often than his opponent.

Qualifier Stricker Wins A Five-Set Battle

Stricker is appearing in just his second Grand Slam, making his debut at the French Open in May.

He earned his place in the main draw the hard way, by coming through qualifying, to earn his chance against the world number 93, Alexei Popyrin of Australia.

One break of serve was all it took to earn the Australian the first set.

But an early break put the Swiss in control of the second set, although he made hard work of closing it out, and six set points were saved before he made one finally count.

The third set, though, was a comparative breeze, as Stricker raced into a four love lead, and then managed things from there.

The pair swapped breaks at the start of the fourth set which was ultimately decided in the tenth game, when the Australian raised his game, and broke to force the match into a fifth and deciding test.

This time Stricker was the one to go a break down, but he recovered it, and the match seemed destined for a tie-break decider, when Popyrin offered up a break point.

Stricker needed no second invitation, converting it, and then serving out.
