Azarenka Made to Work Hard By Yue

Yue Yuan is ranked outside the top 100 and had needed the qualifying rounds to make it to the main draw of the competition. Not surprisingly as a result of her record so far, she was a heavy underdog going up against the might of the 20th-ranked Azarenka in the first round.

Azarenka, however, took her time in the encounter, spending two hours and 41 minutes before finding a way to breach her opponent’s defences.

In a match in which Azarenka faced 10 break-points – and was broken twice as well – she finally managed to clinch the victory when she saved two break-points in the second game of the deciding set and then broke her opponent in the third.

The Belarusian number two then went on to save break-points in both, the eighth and the tenth game before serving it out and registering her second grass court win of the season. She has also lost two grass court matches already this year.

Podoroska Stuns Martincova

Having rarely found success outside of clay, it was no surprise to see Podoroska start off a 21/10 underdog in her opener against Tereza Martincova.

And surely enough, 39 minutes into the encounter, Martincova had clinched the first set and then lost a mere five points on her own serve across six games in the second. Surely, Martincova should have gone on to win it with ease.

What actually transpired is that while Podoroska had failed to break Martincova since the first game of the opening set she held on to her own serve in the second. And when the tie-breaker came calling, the Argentine forged ahead 4-1 before closing it out off her second set-point.

Now rattled, Martincova begun to make more and more unforced errors – 14 of her 24 unforced came in the third set – but more vitally she won just one winner in that set. Podoroska wasn’t at her best either but was good enough to take control and make it through 3-6, 7-6 (5), 6-4 and seal her second round berth.

Can she now make things difficult for Azarenka?

Azarenka v Podoroska Prediction and Tip

While Podoroska did manage an upset win, it won’t be the same when she faces a former Grand Slam winner like Azarenka. Barring a complete breakdown of the Azarenka game, we expect her to ease her way to a win here.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Azarenka to win in straight sets: 4/6
