Garcia Makes Short Work of Volynets

A quarterfinalist at the Berlin Open and a quarterfinalist again at the Eastbourne International, Garcia made a strong start to her Wimbledon 2023 campaign with a straight-set win over Katie Volynets.

The Frenchwoman clinched a 6-4, 6-3 win over Volynets in a match lasting an hour and 24 minutes to make it to the second round.

After saving three break-points in the first game of the match, Garcia quickly settled down with her serve. And as the set went on she began to put pressure on the Volynets serve, eventually breaking her in the 10th game to clinch it.

Volynets raced away to a 3-0 lead in the second set with two breaks of serves but Garcia then bounced back with three successive breaks from that point on to finish off the victory. She now faces a slightly more challenging opponent in a former Grand Slam finalist but she starts a favourite again.

Fernandez Scrapes Past Baindl

It took Fernandez two hours and 24 minutes in the end but she will be mighty relieved to register her maiden main draw win at Wimbledon.

The Canadian, who was ranked 13th in the world but has fallen to 95th at the moment, needed three sets to come through against Kateryna Baindl in her opener here. Fernandez triumphed 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 in an encounter that had a whopping 11 breaks of serves in total.

In fact in the final set, Fernandez was down a break on two occasions – in the first game and then again in the fifth – but broke right back in the very next game to bring the match to parity.

She held easily in the ninth game of the final set and put tremendous pressure on Baindl to find herself the elusive break that won her the match.

Can she now put up a fight against Garcia?
