Rublev Shrugs off Mid-Match Struggles against Purcell

In the end it took Rublev only an hour and 35 minutes to get through his first round match but there were times that he looked like he was in some strife.

Rublev won 6-3, 7-5, 6-4 against Max Purcell to reach the second round for the fourth time in a row at Wimbledon.

One break of serve in the first set it all that Rublev needed to grab the lead but when he fell 0-2 behind in the second, it looked like the contest was heating up. Purcell managed to hold on to his serve after that till the eighth game and was all set to serve for the set in the ninth.

Rublev broke right at that time and then again in the next game to turn the set on its head.

In the third, Rublev was broken one more time but this time around he was already a break up and he then made it a second break in the very next game to retake the initiative.

Things could get slightly tougher now for him but Rublev has been in the kind of form that makes him a favourite to make the second week.

This was after he succumbed in the first set tie-breaker before returning to clinch the next three and wrap up the encounter in three hours and 23 minutes.

Karatsev frittered away a 5-2 lead in the first as he lost his serve in the ninth game and then squandered two set-points off his opponent’s serve as well. The set went into a tie-breaker after that which Van Assche clinched.

Breaks were traded early in the second set but once Karatsev got the better of Van Assche’s serve in the seventh game, it was game over. From that point onward, it turned to be one-way traffic with the Russian clinching his maiden second round spot at Wimbledon 6-7 (4), 6-4, 6-2, 6-4.
