Sofia Kenin v Xinyu Wang Head to Head

Kenin leads 2-0, last beating Wang in Auckland at the start of the 2023 season.

Kenin Knocks Out Gauff

Sofia Kenin has delivered an impressive victory in Wimbledon (and for herself) by knocking out the World No. 7 Coco Gauff. The American qualifier needed just two hours to beat Gauff 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 with 22 winners. That said, Coco did commit 33 unforced errors (almost twice as many as her opponent), which certainly shifted the scales away from her.

This is Kenin’s second top-10 win of the season, with the other one coming against Aryna Sabalenka in round two of the Rome Open.

Starting as a qualifier in London, Sofia moved past Irina Falconi, Taylor Townsend, and Moyuka Uchijima in straight sets to reach the main draw.

After battling severe injury and form issues last season, Kenin closed the year outside the top 200 but is now ranked World No. 128. It hasn’t been a perfect year for her so far, given her early losses in Nottingham, Paris, Gaiba, and Madrid.

Nevertheless, Kenin is just 24 and has two Grand Slam finals to her name already. A little bit of confidence can go a long way.

Wang Beats Hunter

Xinyu Wang defeated Storm Hunter 6-3, 6-1 to reach round two in Wimbledon. This also marks her best result in the London Slam.

As a junior player, Wang won the Wimbledon Doubles in 2018 while reaching the semifinal in the singles draw that year.

The 21-year-old is ranked World No. 73, but she is quickly gaining experience. Xinyu is a good doubles player, having won the French Open with Su-Wei Hsieh most recently and reaching the final in Hua Hin and Merida.

On the singles side, Wang’s record is 19-16, which includes a quarterfinal feat in Hobart, semis in Hua Hin, and round three in the French Open. She last played in Berlin, where she retired against Jaimee Fourlis in the opener after clearing the qualifiers.

Kenin v Wang Prediction and Tip

This should be an interesting match, as both players are on even footing. Kenin may have a superior pedigree, but her form may not be as great as Wang’s. But then, the Chinese player hasn’t been entirely perfect, either.

Tips:

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Kenin to win: 4/5
