Mertens Moves Past Hruncakova

Elise Mertens was off to a shaky start in Wimbledon 2023 as she beat Viktoria Hruncakova 7-6(2), 6-2 in an hour and 35 minutes.

World No. 28 did not have that great of preparation on grass. The Belgian was slated to play in Den Bosch but withdrew from the tournament. Then in Eastbourne next, she retired in the opening match against Karolina Pliskova, trailing 7-6(3), 3-6, 3-0.

Elise has a rich history at SW19. On the singles side, she has reached the round-of-16 twice (including last year). As a doubles player, she was the winner here in 2021 and a runner-up in 2022 – respectively, with Su-Wei Hsieh and Shuai Zhang.

As for her season so far, Mertens most recently won the Italian Open doubles and reached the singles fourth round in the French Open, Madrid Open, and Miami Open.

Her tally for the season is 19-13.

Svitolina Upsets Williams

Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina played spoilsport to Venus Williams’ campaign in Wimbledon. Playing with a wildcard, she won the match 6-4, 6-3 comfortably.

A quarterfinalist in the French Open most recently (beating Martin Trevisan, Anna Blinkova, and Daria Kasatkina en route), Svitolina has done pretty well since returning to the WTA Tour post-maternity leave.

Her record is now 13-8, which also includes her singles title from the Strasbourg International and a semifinal feat in the Saint-Malo Challenger.

Now ranked World No. 76, Svitolina is a former World No. 3 who reached the semifinal at Wimbledon in 2019. Armed with 20 career finals, she is clearly a force to be reckoned with.

That said, Elina’s last match was in Birmingham where she lost in the opener to Linda Fruhvirtova in straight sets.
