Tsurenko leads 2-1. Interestingly, they last played in Merida this season where Siniakova finally got a win on the back of Tsurenko’s retirement from the match.

Siniakova Beats Zheng

Picking up where she left things last week, Katerina Siniakova started her Wimbledon journey with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Qinwen Zheng. It was a decent match for her; she was on the break just five times, while Zheng found herself fumbling to save her serve on 14 instances.

As a two-time Wimbledon doubles champion, the Czech has a rich history in the competition and seems quite comfortable on grass. This is only bolstered by the fact that she won the Bad Homburg Open last week, beating the likes of Liudmila Samsonova, Emma Navarro, and Lucia Bronzetti in the final rounds.

Her other singles highlight came in Merida, where she was a semifinalist.

Before that, the number one-ranked doubles player was the runner-up with Marketa Vondrousova in WTA Berlin doubles.

Siniakova’s singles record for the year stands at 14 wins and nine losses. On the doubles tour, she is 17-3 (titles from Indian Wells and the Aus Open).

Tsurenko Survives Liu Threat

Lesia Tsurenko, World No. 60, found herself in a three-set opening match against Claire Liu. Battling for two and a half hours, the Ukrainian took the win 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 with 25 winners and 33 unforced errors. In many ways, luck was on her side as Liu made many mistakes in the match – 53 unintended errors off the racquet.

Of course, this is not to say that Tsurenko did not deserve the win. After the season she has had, it was a well-earned victory.

With 29 wins in total against 10 losses, the 33-year-old has worked quite hard in 2023.

Her effort paid off in the form of her runner-up feat in WTA Hua Hin, fourth round in the French Open, and round three in Madrid and Rome. That said, Tsurenko lost to Dayana Yastremska in the qualifiers of WTA Birmingham recently.
