For the second straight year Elisabetta Cocciaretto made it to the second round at Wimbledon as the Italian defeated Colombia’s Camila Osorio in straight sets on Wednesday.

Cocciaretto had made a strong start in the contest, building a 3-0 lead, following a double break. But the world no. 71 hit back immediately by getting both the break back and tying the match at one-set apiece.

Cocciaretto recovered quickly and won the next three games in a row to seal the opening set. The second set was an extremely competitive one as well with Cocciaretto coming back from a break down thrice before breaking a fourth time in the final game to clinch the contest 6-3, 6-4 in an hour and 14 minutes.

The Italian is now 1-1 on grass this season and 18-12 across levels.

She will be hoping to make the third round for the first time at the grass court major.

Rebeka Masarova battled past no. 31 seed Mayar Sherif in a dramatic three-set opening round contest to register her first ever main draw win at Wimbledon.

Masarova saved three set points in the first set, before clinching the set and taking a 1-0 lead. She then lost the second after conceding the only break of the set in the fourth game.

In the deciding set, the Spaniard was broken in the very first game, but she came back to draw level at 4-4 and then edged out the Egyptian in the final set tiebreak for a 7-5, 3-6, 7-6 (10-6) victory.

It has been a good year for Masarova, who played her first ever WTA final at the Auckland Classic in January. She is also in good form on grass. After losing in the first round in Berlin, she made it to the quarterfinals at the Bad Homburg Open and has now got off to a good start at Wimbledon.
