Shapovalov Overcomes Opening Albot Salvo

It took Shapovalov some time to get going but once he had done that, the Canadian player had managed to find his way past Radu Albot in his opener.

A semifinalist at this tournament in 2021, Shapovalov needed two hours and 31 minutes for his 5-7, 6-4, 6-2, 6-2 win over Albot to seal his second win on grass for the season.

Shapovalov did not start off too well, losing his serve late in the first set and then falling 1-2 behind with another break of serve. It was in the fourth game of the second set where Shapovalov started to turn things around with a break of serve and then found his rhythm with a second break as Albot served to stay in the set.

They traded breaks in the first five games of the third set but from that point onward it turned into a one-way traffic as Shapovalov won 11 of the next 13 games to wrap up the encounter.

He will now look to make it two in two.

Barrere Doubles His Wimbledon Count

Having won only a round earlier at Wimbledon, Barrere had entered this season’s edition ranked 49th in the world – his career-best ranking.

To go with that, Barrere had also earned some grass form coming into this tournament having made the semifinal of the Eastbourne International last week.

Starting out against Lloyd Harris, who is himself making a comeback on the circuit this season, as a 11/10 underdog, Barrere wasn’t expecting things to go easy and that’s exactly what happened. It took him three hours and 10 minutes and four sets to make it past Harris winning 7-5, 6-7 (4), 7-5, 6-3 to make it to the second round.

What proved to be the difference between the two players was Barrere’s ability to hold on to his serve thanks to his super second serves which he ended with 63% wins. And while he hit just 36 winners to his opponent’s 57, he also suffered just 45 unforced errors while Harris had 69 to his name,

Barrere could prove to be a formidable opponent here.
