Fritz Escapes With Five-Set Win Over Hanfmann

Taylor Fritz overcame the sternest of tests in the first round, beating Germany’s Yannick Hanfmann in five pulsating sets, in a match that stretched into a third day by the time he put the finishing touches to his 6-4 2-6 4-6 7-5 6-3 win on Court 2.

Originally played on Monday, Fritz took the first set 6-4, taking two of his three break points in a tight opener.

Hanfmann, however, who came into this year’s Wimbledon in possibly the best form of his career on grass, did not drop his serve in the next two sets and limited his unforced error count to a single digit in each set to turn the match around and took a two-sets-to-one lead.

With his back against the wall and facing potential early elimination, Fritz produced a gutsy hold from 0-40 down in the fifth game of the fourth set.

Hanfmann’s inability to take any of the three break points came back to haunt him as deep in the set, Fritz broke him for the first time in almost an eternity to level the match.

By the start of the fifth set, darkness engulfed the clouds at the All England Club. Just five games into the decider, the match was suspended due to darkness with Fritz leading 3-2 and on serve.

Tuesday, the outside courts were sodden due to rain which forced play to be called off. The match resumed on Wednesday, almost 48 hours since the last point.

Again, it went down to the final few games, Hanfmann serving second meant that he’d always feel the pressure while serving and cracked in the eighth game. Fritz coolly served to love to secure his spot in the second round.

Ymer Through With Easy Win

Mikael Ymer had no such trouble in securing his berth in the second round as he dismissed Slovakia’s Alex Molcan 6-3 6-3 6-4 in an hour and 45 minutes.

Ymer completed his match on Monday on Court 5, pulling clear of any ensuing drama that the likes of Fritz and most players encountered since Monday.

The Swede was dominant on serve and behind the return too. Molcan’s inability to adapt to grass proved his ultimate downfall as he struggled to counter the low bouncing surface.

It’s always trickier for a clay courter who uses heavy topspin and makes his living from grinding and prolonging points.

Molcan wasn’t afforded that here on the pristine grass at Wimbledon. To put the numbers into perspective, the lefty did not fashion a single break point in the whole match.

By contrast, Ymer converted four of his 14 break point chances and planted 39 winners, which was twice Molcan’s tally. The Swedish World No. 59 has not gone beyond the second round at Wimbledon, losing at this stage in each of his last two appearances. Can he bounce off an inconsistent Fritz?

Ymer v Fritz Prediction and Tip

Taylor Fritz breathed a huge sigh of relief after snatching victory from the jaws of defeat. Taking Fritz moneyline should come with a pint of caution here, but he’ll be expected to survive another nip and tuck match.

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Fritz to win AND Both players to win a set: 6/5
