Ostapenko Breezes Past Belgian Qualifier

Ostapenko, who has both a Wimbledon semi-final and last eight appearance on her CV, made a confident start to her latest campaign at the All England Club.

Playing the Belgian qualifier, Greet Minnen, she made short work of an opponent ranked 123rd in the world.

She made a strong start, breaking Minnen in her opening service game.

The Belgian did have a break back point, but she could not convert it, and instead was broken again as the Latvian breezed through the first set. Three games against serve at the start of the second set left Ostapenko a break up.

And another break gave Ostapenko the chance to serve out, which she duly took.

Cirstea could be a lot tougher to handle though.

Cirstea Beats 2021 Semi-Finalist

Despite competing in this tournament since 2008, Cirstea has never been beyond the third round of this championship.

However, she will have been pleased by the way that she battled past the German Tatjana Maria in their first round match, the woman who reached the semi-finals two years ago.

After the first two games were shared, Cirstea took control of the first set, winning five successive games and breaking the German serve three times.

The second set saw a reversal of fortune, and this time it was the German who claimed three breaks of serve, although Cirstea did recover one of them.

Both women tightened up their games in the third set, and, in the end, one dropped serve from Maria proved decisive. Cirstea was able to preserve her advantage and close out the match.

Can she now test the in-form Ostapenko?

Ostapenko v Cirstea Prediction and Tip
