Pella Shocks Coric In Five

Guido Pella showed he’s still got it even at 33 and bouncing back from a career-ending knee injury. The Argentine rolled back the years to knock off World No. 14 Borna Coric in five sets.

In their second grand slam meeting in the head-to-head, this time it was Pella who had the last laugh. The 33-year-old who entered this year’s Championships with a protected ranking built what looked like an insurmountable 6-3 7-5 lead.

That had been suspended deep in the second set, and on resumption Pella closed out the second set 7-5. But the break appeared to have done Coric a world of good as he began to redline his game.

The Croat got the break in the final game of the third set to cut Pella’s lead. That reaction planted a seed of doubt in the Argentine’s game who 24 hours earlier was in command. Coric broke in the second game of the fourth set and kept consolidating till bringing the match on level terms.

But surprisingly, his level dipped in the final set. With the score 1-1, Pella reeled off five straight games, breaking Coric twice.

Mayot Eases Past Bonzi

Harold Mayot’s Wimbledon adventure is showing no signs of stopping anytime soon as the former junior No. 1 eased past compatriot Benjamin Bonzi in his opening round, 6-3 6-4 7-5 in exactly two hours of play.

Mayot was virtually unstoppable in qualifying in Roehampton. With his confidence at an all-time high, he was the favorite to beat his more experienced countryman Bonzi, starting the match 8/13 with the bookies.

The 21-year-old was impregnable on serve and he was so clean with his baseline game. Mayot tallied 15 aces to just a single double fault.

His dominance on serve enabled him to serve a whopping seven of eight break points he faced. That was a telling number as Mayot would convert four of his six break points.

Mayot also recorded almost twice as many winners as Bonzi, with 49, and he’ll almost certainly be a favorite when he faces Guido Pella.

Pella v Mayot Prediction and Tip

Harold Mayot had not played a match on grass before Wimbledon, but he’s got an incredible mix of power and placement behind his massive serve. Pella’s win over Coric counted as a big upset, but it wouldn’t really come as a shock if he won here. His experience is critical, but it still feels like MAyot will be the one dictating the points with his attacking skillset on the surface.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Over 3.5 sets in the match: 8/15
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Mayot to win: 4/6
