Potapova Beats Swiss Teen Naef

Anastasia Potapova defeated Swiss teenager Celine Naef 6-3 6-3 to kick off her Wimbledon campaign in the best possible start.

The match was delayed for almost 24 hours due to persistent rains on Tuesday which forced all the matches on the outside courts to be called off.

The pair were scheduled on Court 16 on Wednesday where Potapova spent 75 minutes to record her fourth win in this year’s grass-court swing – the most she has garnered in a single season in her career.

The first set was topsy turvy with both players struggling to hold serve. After five service breaks, in which three went Potapova’s way, the Russian had the match under control, wrapping up the set in 38 minutes.

In the second set, Naef was broken three times, winning 54% first-serve points and tallying four double faults. Her 17 unforced errors did not help things either, considering Potapova recorded just a fraction of that number.

The Russian will now attempt to reach the Wimbledon third round for the first time when she faces Kaja Juvan.

Juvan Beats Unranked Betova

Kaja Juvan received the kindest of opening draws that a qualifier could have possibly wanted. The World No. 244 defeated the unranked Margarita Betova 6-0 6-3.

Juvan needed just an hour and 10 minutes to complete the rout against a player without a single win in 2023 and who only returned to competition this season after a maternity absence.

Betova was using her protected ranking privilege at the Championships but was completely out of touch as Juvan’s run from qualifying culminated in a main draw win yet again. The Russian tallied 23 unforced errors in the match – a glaring number. She was broken six times and won just 16 of 44 return points in the match.

Juvan, who is defending third-round points after her exploits last year, which included a massive win over Beatriz Haddad Maia, will now look to reach the same stage from 12 months ago when she faces fellow 22-year-old Anastasia Potapova.

Potapova v Juvan Prediction and Tip

Potapova came to Wimbledon with some grass-court momentum under her belt. And playing a pair of qualifiers in back-to-back rounds is probably a dream draw on paper.

Juvan, however, is a former top 60 player who has reached the third round of Wimbledon twice in her career with victories over the likes of Bencic and Haddad Maia to boot. This could be a stern test for the world No. 23 despite what the odds suggest.

Tips:

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Three sets in the match: 7/5
