Their only previous meeting came on the hard courts of the ITF circuit way back in 2018 and Tomova had won that.

Tomova Shocks Pera

In a match that was expected to go Bernarda Pera’s way, having started out as a 1/2 favourite, Tomova came back from a set down to clinch her second round berth at Wimbledon for the second year running.

Tomova, who had lost in the first round at both the grass court competitions she played in the lead-up to this year’s Wimbledon, was down 0-2 in the first set but came back to soon serve for the set at 6-5. Unfortunately for her, she was unable to hold on to her serve and then fell in the ensuing tie-breaker.

If one thought that would give Pera some confidence or break Tomova’s, they were wide off the mark.

The Bulgarian came back stronger and broke Pera early in the second set and while she dropped her serve in the third game, there was another break that came her way in the eighth game. This time around there was no looking back.

Tomova went 2-0 up for the third time in a row and for the third successive time, she lost her serve immediately afterward. This time she broke right back too and soon for the third time in the set to clinch a 6-7 (3), 6-3, 6-3 win in two hours and 20 minutes.

Boulter Eases Past Saville

While Boulter had lifted her first ever WTA title earlier this season when she won on the grass courts of Nottingham, her form following that was slightly underwhelming.

She had fallen to Lin Zhu in straight sets in the first round of the Birmingham Open and then lost to Petra Martic equally quickly in the Eastbourne International opener.

Which is why, while Boulter came into her opening round match as a favourite against Daria Saville, the pressure of playing in front of her home crowd at Wimbledon would have been something to surmount.

Boulter did that well, winning 7-6 (4), 6-2 in nearly two hours. While she was broken once in both the sets Boulter was never in the danger of going down and quelled her opponent’s fight very soon.

Against Tomova, Boulter will think she has a better chance now that she has found her footing and will hope to emulate her 2022 showing where she had made the third round too.
