Alexandrova Defeats In-form Navarro

Ekaterina Alexandrova faced a potential banana peel in her opening match, taking on 22-year-old American Emma Navarro who had a strong grass-court campaign coming to Wimbledon.

Navarro who was a finalist at the Ilkey ITF, had also reached the semifinal at the WTA 250 in Bad Homburg this past week.

And the early indications were that Alexandrova was in for a battle. Navarro responded going a break down almost instantly as she broke Alexandrova to level the first set at 3-all.

But she couldn’t sustain her brilliance for long as Alexandrova’s superior weight of shot and supreme serving won the day.

Alexandrova broke Navarro for the second time in the first set to take a 5-4 lead, before serving it out to 15.

In the second stanza, it was one-way traffic. Alexandrova forged a 5-1 lead with the insurance of a double break. She needed two bites of the cherry to close it out.

Brengle Routs Errani

Madison Brengle made lightwork of Sara Errani in a veterans’ first-round clash at this year’s Wimbledon. She won 6-3 6-1 in an hour and 11 minutes.

Errani who isn’t fond of the grass as her record suggests – just eight wins in 10 main draw appearances before this week. Even during her peak years, the Italian just didn’t have the power nor the height to excel on the lawn.

Again, Errani was overpowered by her opponent on grass, but the scoreline certainly flattered Brengle.

Brengle hit 20 winners to 14 unforced errors and converted six of her 15 break points. Errani wasn’t far off, with 21 winners to 30 unforced errors. And Italian veteran did have joy in breaking Brengle three times in the match.

Brengle, however, did not look in a spot of bother throughout the match. She will get the chance to contest a second-round match at the Championships for the fifth time on Thursday.

Alexandrova v Brengle Prediction and Tip

Alexandrova couldn’t have chosen a more perfect setting to avenge her loss to the American in Cleveland last summer. The Russian is in her pomp and is considered a dark horse in the tournament. We don’t expect surprises here.
