Novak Djokovic v Stan Wawrinka Head to Head

This is a rivalry that goes all the way back to 2004 when they first faced off on the Challenger circuit. It’s 20-6 in favour of Djokovic before this but what’s fascinating to note is they have never faced off on grass!

Djokovic Makes it Past Thompson

Djokovic fans who expect the moon from him would have found him to not be at his best in both his opening two rounds but the plain fact is that even when not at his best he has been registering straight-set wins.

In the first round he overcame Pedro Cachin before taking down a fighting effort from Jordan Thompson. He won 6-3, 7-6 (4), 7-5 in a match that lasted nearly two and a half hours.

While Djokovic did not face a single break-point in the entire match, he did not get past his opponent’s serve too many times. In the first set, he took the lead in the sixth game with a break of serve but then found it tough to break again.

This continued till the end of the second set in which he was taken to the tie-breaker. And then again in the third set, there were no breaks of serves over the first 11 games before Djokovic finally had the last laugh in the 12th.

Having gotten into his rhythm, Djokovic will now look to up the ante even further and make it past an old rival.

Wawrinka Quells the Etcheverry Challenge

The last time Wawrinka made it two successive wins in a row at the highest level came in March this year at the Indian Wells Open. He had made the fourth round there.

Since then there have been the odd wins here and there but it’s here at Wimbledon again that he has made the third round, having last done that in 2015.

After having eased past Emil Ruusuvuori in straight sets in the first round, Wawrinka overcame Tomas Etcheverry in two hours and 34 minutes. He won 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 against a player ranked 32nd in the world but more attuned to playing and winning on clay.

Wawrinka was broken once – in the second set – but other than that he saved two break-points and overcame his opponent’s serve four times to come through.

Can he put up a challenge here to the 23-time Grand Slam winner?
