Sinner Sends Schwartzman Packing

Diego Schwartzman has had the kind of season in which he has struggled to get going on his favourite clay as well. For him to make it to the second round was shock enough but that’s where the party ended for the Argentine.

Playing Sinner was never going to be an easy proposition as a result of his form issues and while Schwartzman put up some sort of a show in the first set of their second round encounter, the Italian player gained traction as the match progressed.

In the end, Sinner needed a shade over two hours to register his 7-5, 6-1, 6-2 win over Schwartzman, following on from an even easier first round victory against another Argentine in Juan Manuel Cerundolo.

Sinner did suffer a break of serve but that came in the third set by which time the match had already been sealed bar the shouting.

And now facing a player ranked 79th, Sinner should feel doubly confident in repeating a showing like this again.

Halys Breaches the Vukic Defence

27-year-old Aleksandar Vukic has risen to 87th in the world, his career-best ranking  and can be expected to nudge further up with a second round appearance here. However, he found Halys too difficult to surmount in round two, losing in straight sets to his French opponent.

Halys, who hadn’t played a single ATP tournament on grass before Wimbledon, had won just one match at Wimbledon in his career before 2023. That came over Benoit Paire last year.

This year, Halys doubled that count with a hard-fought, shock victory against Dan Evans and then made it his third victory when he defeated Vukic in straight sets.

The 26-year-old Frenchman won 6-3, 6-1, 6-4 in a match that barely lasted an hour and a half, with Halys not facing even one break-point. He broke his opponent five times, crunching the win on the back of his 36 winners and 14 unforced errors.

Can Halys now make things difficult for his Italian opponent? Doubtful.

Sinner v Halys Prediction and Tip

Sinner can be expected to make it three straight-set wins in a row here. We don’t think Halys has too much to offer in this one.

Tips:

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Sinner to win in straight sets: 11/10
