Begu Moves Past Marino

Irina-Camelia Begu began her Wimbledon campaign with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 win over Rebecca Marino. Needing two hours, the Romanian won the match on the back of her 23 winners and Marino’s massive 45 unforced errors.

The 32-year-old is playing at SW19 for the 10th time in her career; the best she has done is reaching round three thrice – including in 2021 and 2022.

Looking at her season, it has been rather dull. Begu has bagged 13 wins while losing 10. Her last tournament was the French Open, where she made it to the round of 32 before losing to Karolina Muchova.

Irina’s best result of the season came in Madrid, where she was a quarterfinalist. Earlier in the year, she was a semifinalist in Adelaide as well. It hasn’t been the most impressive of the seasons, but Begu has had her moments – beating Veronika Kudermetova, Jelena Ostapenko, Sofia Kenin, and Liudmila Samsonova.

Blinkova Starts Well

Anna Blinkova started her Wimbledon campaign with a three-set win over Yanina Wickmayer. The match went on for an hour and 47 minutes and saw the Russian player win 6-2, 4-6, 6-3.

It was a decent performance from Anna, who is now World No. 40 after enjoying a pretty good year on the whole. Most recently, she played in Bad Homburg, where she was a quarterfinalist. Before that, she made it to round two in Berlin.

Blinkova’s first major breakthrough came in Hobart in January, when she made it to the final four – all the way from the qualifiers. The second instance was in Strasbourg, where the 24-year-old reached her second WTA career final (loss to Elina Svitolina).

Between those events, Blinkova struggled a lot with consistency, but it seems that, of late, she is on a more steady path. Her record is 23-17.

Blinkova v Begu Prediction and Tip

This one should be an interesting match. Begu is well-experienced, while Blinkova is fielding some serious form and momentum. A three-set affair is certainly on the cards.

Tips:

  • Low-Risk Tip: Blinkova to win: 1/1
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 20.5 games in the match: 5/6
