No. 31 seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina handed Arthur Fils a first round defeat on the latter’s Wimbledon debut.

The Spaniard came back from a break down to win the first set in the tiebreak and then dominated the contest over the next two sets to oust the wild card 7-6 (7-3), 6-1, 6-2.

The one hour and 49 minute contest saw the world no. 34 save 5 of 7 break points and convert 6 of 8.

This was Davidovich Fokina’s first in on grass this season, after he suffered first round defeats in Queen’s Club and Mallorca.

Thanks to the win, Davidovich Fokina is into the second round at Wimbledon for the second time in his third attempt. After losing the opener on debut, he had reached the round of 64 last year.

Facing the Spaniard will be Botic Van de Zandschulp, who held off China’s Zhang Zhizhen in a five-set first round contest.

In an engrossing four-hour contest, the Dutch player was outplayed in the first set, but he drew level in the second set, winning the tiebreak after coming back from a break down earlier in the set.

The world no. 44 Van de Zandschulp then won the third set in the tiebreak as well, before conceding the only break of the fourth set in the sixth game, which allowed the Chinese player to tie the match at two sets apiece.

Van de Zandschulp then got off to a fine start in the final set, breaking the Chinese in the second game and then saving three break points in the next game to build a 3-0 lead. He then broke the world no. 52 one more time in the set to seal a 2-6, 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (8-6), 3-6, 6-2 victory.

This is the Dutchman’s first win on grass this year. He too lost his first round matches in his previous tournaments in Queen’s and Eastbourne.

In fact this was Van de Zandschulp’s first win since April 22 when he won the semifinals at Munich to reach his second ATP final. He lost to Holger Rune in the final and then suffered five consecutive opening  round defeats.

Having broken the losing streak, the 27-year-old will now be hoping to build on the start. This is his third Wimbledon appearance and he has passed the first round test all three times. But while he lost in the second round in 2021, he made it to the round of 16 last year. can he reach the third round again?
