Alex de Minaur v Matteo Berrettini Head to Head

de Minaur Stutters, But Wins

Alex de Minaur was as low as 1/10 to win his opening match against Belgian qualifier Kimmer Coppejans, the Belegina world No. 188 who defeated Taro Daniel in the final round of qualifying to reach the main draw.

But what ought to have been the banker of the day, turned into a potential upset alert. The first set stayed on serve until late in the ninth game when De Minaur broke. The Aussie, however, could not serve out the set, as he gave away the break back cheaply to love.

And after saving a further four break points in the next game, Coppejans stunned the World No. 17 when he won the ensuing tiebreak.

That woke the man nicknamed ”Demon”, who did not drop any of his service games in the next two sets. De Minaur upped the intensity a notch and broke Coppejans three times in those two sets to turn the match on its head.

Although they couldn’t complete the match on Wednesday due to darkness, the much-fancied Aussie completed his comeback by winning the fourth set in a tiebreak. Coppejans it should be noted, served for the fourth set at one point, and even had three set points, but couldn’t push it to a fifth.

Berrettini Wins Three-Day Slugfest

Matteo Berrettini admitted his will to play was bigger than his preparation after pulling off a stunning four-set victory over compatriot Lorenzo Sonego in the first round of the Wimbledon Championships.

Berrettni, beaten by Sonego in his Stuttgart title defense last month, has played at limited capacity this year due to multiple injuries.

But Berrettini turned the tables on Sonego and put on a gutsy display of power tennis to come away with a 6-7 6-3 7-6 6-3 victory in a match that lasted three days.

On Tuesday, he trailed by a set when the match was suspended due to heavy showers. On resumption on Wednesday, Berrettini redlined his serve and forehand, racking up 26 winners in the next two sets to reverse the score in his favor. The match was suspended again, this time due to darkness.

The former finalist used the break to recharge and came back in fine fettle. He broke Sonego midway through the fourth set and had to save a pair of break points on his own serve to close out a massive win.

De Minaur v Berrettini Prediction and Tip

Could a win over Sonego rekindle Berrettini’s season? We certainly hope so, but the man himself is taking it match by match. De Minaur has had the ideal preparation for Wimbledon and has our backing to get the better of the Italian.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: De Minaur to win: 4/6
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 40.5 games in the match: 10/11
