Andrey Rublev v David Goffin Head to Head

There have been two previous meetings between these two players and Rublev has won them both. They came at the 2017 US Open and 2020 Australian Open.

Rublev Struggles Past Karatsev

It was always going to be a battle when Rublev took on fellow Russian Aslan Karatsev in their second round match which is why it wasn’t too much of a surprise when he ended up needing nearly three hours to come through.

Rublev overcame the loss of the first set before winning 6-7 (4), 6-3, 6-4, 7-5 in a match in which he was broken twice.

The first of those breaks of serves came with Rublev serving for the first set at 5-4. He would go on to lose the tie-breaker. One break of serve apiece in the next two sets helped Rublev take a two sets to one lead but again, in the fourth set when he had a chance to serve for the match at 5-4, he was broken.

Fortunately for Rublev, he broke right back and the second time he got that opportunity he managed to make it through.

Rublev had earlier eased past Max Purcell in the first round.

Goffin Makes Light Work of Another Low-Ranked Opponent

Former world number seven Goffin has himself fallen to outside the top 120 on the ATP Rankings charts. Which is why he has been fortunate enough to face two players in the tournament so far who are both equally lowly-ranked at the moment and Goffin has taken full advantage.

The 2022 quarterfinalist had beaten Fabian Marozsan in the first round in a match that went on for four sets.

In the second round, Goffin overcame Marcelo Tomas Barrios Vera in another four-setter with a fourth set bagel – the same as what had panned out in the previous round for him.

He took three hours and 23 minutes to win 7-6 (3), 5-7, 6-2, 6-0 to set up this meeting with Rublev.

Given what he has done in the past at Wimbledon, he will give himself a chance here.

Rublev v Goffin Prediction and Tip

Rublev starts off a 1/5 favourite here which, to my mind, is too short. We believe the match could get closer than that.

Tips:

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Rublev to win AND Over 34.5 games in the match: 6/5
