This will be their first meeting at the top level. They met four times in lower level events in 2016 and 2017. While Broady prevailed on hard court matches, Shapovalov won both the grass court meetings. So they are 2-2 from previous meetings.

World no. 29 Denis Shapovalov struck 18 aces and won 83 percent points on his first serve as he powered past world no. 49 Gregoire Barrere in the second round on Thursday.

The Canadian was not broken in the one hour and 55 minute contest as he saved the only break point that he faced during the match and converted 2 of 5 to score a 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (9-7) victory.

Shapovalov was dominant throughout the contest and also struck 45 winners during the match. The 26th seed had begun his campaign with a 5-7, 6-4, 6-2, 6-2 victory over Radu Albot in the first round. The lefty had out-aced the Moldovan qualifier 13-0 and struck 45 winners in that match as well.

Shapovalov has been inconsistent by his standards this year, reaching the quarterfinal stage just once in his season opener in Adelaide. He had also made it to the third round in the first two majors. Can he reach the fourth round at Wimbledon?

This is only the second time that Shapovalov is in the third round of the grass court major. The last time he reached this far was in 2021, when he went on to reach the semifinals before falling to Novak Djokovic.

Broady Upsets Ruud

For the second straight year Liam Broady is into the third round at Wimbledon. The local hope, ranked no. 142nd in the world upset the fourth seed and 2023 French Open runner-up Casper Ruud in five sets in the second round.

Broady, who had begun his campaign with a 6-1, 6-3, 7-5 victory over France’s Constant Lestienne on Monday, needed three hours and 28 minutes to beat the Norwegian 6-4, 3-6, 4-6, 6-3, 6-0 on Thursday.

The 29-year-old left-hander hit 56 winners, saved 6 of 9 break points and converted 6 of 13 to send the world no. 4 packing.

The world no. 142 Broady is 4-4 at the tour level this year. But overall he is 25-14, thanks to a title success and a runner-up finish at the Challenger level.

Last year, he was stopped in the third round by Alex de Minaur. Can he make it to the fourth round of a major for the first time in his career?
