Shapovalov Floors Broady in Four

Denis Shapovalov extinguished British hopes in the men’s draw. With Cam Norrie and Andy Murray both exiting the tournament, Liam Broady was tasked with carrying the British flag.

But after the biggest win of his career over Casper Ruud just 24 hours earlier, Broady ran out of fumes and ideas as Shapovalov put him to the sword.

The Canadian’s experience proved telling as was his proven pedigree on grass. Shapovalov lost the first set but showed resilience and maturity to turn the match in his favor and escape with a 4-6 6-2 7-5 7-5 win in front of a packed crowd on Court 2.

A titanic first set lasted 51 minutes, as the two players traded blows from the baseline. Broady was a tad more consistent keeping his errors in check to go ahead. But unlike his match against Casper Ruud, Shapovalov was extremely aggressive throughout.

And it was only a matter of time before Broady’s intensity dropped at the sheer power Shapovalov brought to the table. Shapovalov committed 23 unforced errors in total in set 2 and set 3, while breaking Broady five times.

By the time the fourth set rolled in, Shapovalov was now bossing the match. He won 94% first-serve points (dropped just one point) and planted 15 winners, which was three times that of the Briton.

In what has been a turbulent year for Shapovalov, a place in the fourth round of Wimbledon is just what the doctor ordered.

Safiullin Beats Pella To Extend Stay

Roman Safiullin is running the gauntlet at the 2023 Wimbledon Championships. After his odds-defying five-set win over 20th seed Roberto Bautista Agut in his opener, Safiullin has since broken new ground at grand slam level.

The big-hitting Russian took out a couple of lefties, in Corentin Moutet and Guido Pella to set up a fourth-round showdown against another southpaw in Shapovalov.

On paper, Safiullin’s draw has been an absolute gift since his shocking win over Bautista Agut. He has notched a pair of straight sets wins in back-to-back days.

Against Pella, the first two sets were highly competitive, taking an hour and a half. But the Argentine veteran was second best in the third set in which he won a measly 31% first-serve points. Safiullin served a bagel, which included 10 winners.

After running late to sign up for the French Open qualifiers in May, Safiullin has more than made up for lost points and prize money at Wimbledon. And who knows maybe this dream could have another chapter.

Shapovalov v Safiullin Prediction and Tip

This smells of a potential banana peel for Shapovalov and we recommend taking the Russian to win a set or two. It could very well be a five-set in the making with Shapovalov’s risk-tolerant approach playing into Safiullin’s hands.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Safiullin to win a set – Yes: 2/7
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Five sets in the match: 9/4
