Medvedev Advances as Lehecka Retires

Daniil Medvedev is into the quarterfinal at Wimbledon for the first time in his career. The 27-year-old Russian, who is making his fifth appearance in the grass court major, entered the last eight stage after his fourth round opponent Jiri Lehecka pulled out of the contest due to an injury.

Medvedev was leading the Czech 6-4, 6-2 when the 2022 ATP Next Gen runner-up withdrew from the contest. Perhaps it was his three-hour-and-50-minute third round win over Tommy Paul that took its toll on Lehecka, who didn’t move well against Medvedev and needed a medical timeout after the first set.

Following the withdrawal, Medvedev became the 10th active player to reach the quarterfinal of all the majors. He won the title at the U.S. Open in 2021 and finished runner-up in 2019. He also reached back-to-back finals at the Australian Open in 2021 and 2022 and was a quarterfinalist at Roland Garros in 2021.

Ranked no. 3 in the world, he now has a chance of reaching his sixth major semifinal. And he has a good chance of doing that as he has been in splendid form throughout the year.

The 20-time tour-level champion improved to 45-8 in 2023 and he is 6-2 on grass. He has played six finals and won five if them this year. Now he is two away from reaching another Grand Slam final. This has been by far his best showing at a major this year, after a third round exit from Melbourne and a shock first round defeat at Roland Garros.

Medvedev had begun his campaign by beating beaten Britain’s Arthur Fery 7-5, 6-4, 6-3 in the first round and he then ousted France’s Adrian Mannarino 6-3, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) in the second round.

Medvedev, however, dropped a set in his third round match against Marton Fucsovics on Saturday. But he managed to knock out the Hungarian 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4.

Can he carry his fine form into the quarterfinals?

Eubanks Stuns Tsitsipas

Christopher Eubanks’ amazing run continued at Wimbledon as the world no. 43 edged out the fifth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas on Monday to march into his maiden Grand Slam quarterfinal.

Making his debut at SW19 this year, Eubanks had never gone past the second round in his eight previous Grand Slam appearances and that included six first round defeats. But at Wimbledon he has embarked on a dream run, reaching his maiden quarterfinal and he will be hoping for the dream to last a bit longer.

Eubanks didn’t get off to a god start against the world no. 5 in Monday as the Greek broke him twice to take the first set. Eubanks could not break in the second set either but he edged the tiebreak by getting a vital mini-break to tie the match at one-set apiece. In the third, Tsitsipas was once again back in his elements as he broke two more times to have his nose ahead in the contest. But once again the fighter in Eubanks refused to surrender and the 27-year-old levelled the match at 2-sets all.

In the deciding set, Eubanks broke in the first game but the Greek broke back in the sixth game. Eubanks restored the advantage by breaking back immediately in the next game and then he protected the advantage to seal a 3-6, 7-6 (7-4), 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory.

Eubanks, who won his maiden ATP title in Mallorca last month, has improved to 9-2 on the surface.

Eubanks had served 28 aces during a 4-6, 7-5, 7-5, 6-3 win over Thiago Monteiro in the first round and he served 21 aces to upset 12th seed Cameron Norrie 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) in the second round.

He then beat Australia’s Christopher O’Connell 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-2) in third round before upsetting Tsitsipas.

Can Eubanks keep the dream run going?
