Venus Williams v Daria Kasatkina Head to Head

Kasatkina and Williams have crossed paths only thrice before this meeting. The young Russian presently leads 2-1, with her last win over Williams coming back in the semifinal of the 2018 Indian Wells Open.

Can Williams Keep Kasatkina at Bay?

Kasatkina is one of the few players on the tour to lead Williams in the head to head tally. That, combined with the fact that Venus hasn’t had an ideal start to the season, it will be tricky for her to solve the Kasatkina riddle.

The three-time Miami Open champion lost in the third round in Auckland and Melbourne, losing respectively to Bianca Andreescu and Simona Halep. As for her performance in the Indian Wells, she reached the quarterfinal before bowing out to Angelique Kerber in straight sets.

Williams hasn’t won a title since 2016 although the very next season, she lost in the final of the Australian Open, Wimbledon, and WTA Finals Singapore. That feat also helped her reach the top 10 again, albeit possibly for the last time.

The 21-year-old Russian had a brilliant season last year, reaching the No. 10 spot in the rankings in October. It started with her reaching the final in the Indian Wells Open and eventually winning the Kremlin Cup, later in the year.

Between these two events, she also reached the quarterfinal in the French Open, WTA Eastbourne, and at the SW19.

This season, however, she had a start completely opposite to that. She lost in the first round in Brisbane, Sydney, and Melbourne. It wasn’t until she participated in the St. Petersburg Open that she won her first match and even, she lost in the quarterfinal to Vera Zvonareva.

In Dubai and Indian Wells, she lost in the second round. In Miami, she enjoyed a bye and defeated Cori Gauff in the opener.

Venus Williams v Daria Kasatkina Predictions & Tips

On one hand, Williams has years of experience backed by 49 singles titles while Kasatkina is a youngster, who is at a mere 2. To give you a perspective, Williams reached her first major final on the tour in the 1997 US Open, where she lost to Martina Hingis. That match took place a few months after Kasatkina was born.

Williams will start as the favourite here although, she will be challenged. It can possibly go either way.

Tip: Under 21.5 games in the match: 17/20 (William Hill)
