Jabeur Rebounds to Beat Sabalenka

For the second match in a row, Ons Jabeur came back from a set down to beat a player ranked higher than her and as a result of that she has now moved into the final at Wimbledon for the second successive year.

Jabeur, who had beaten last year’s champion and third seed Elena Rybakina in a gripping quarterfinal on Wednesday, battled past Aryna Sabalenka in similar fashion in a three-set semifinal on Thursday.

The Tunisian squandered three break points in the opening set before losing it in the tiebreak. She didn’t have a great start in the second set either as Sabaenka broke early and built a 2-4 lead.

Jabeur, however, refused to surrender and clawed her way back into the set to keep her chances alive. She won four games in a row to take the second set and then got the decisive break in the sixth game of the final set.

She did miss out on two match points in the eighth game on the Belarusian’s serve, but closed out the match in the next game for a 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 6-3 victory over the world no. 2.

The Tunisian had beaten world no. 3 Rybakina 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 6-1 in the quarterfinal, to get the revenge of her defeat in the last year’s final.

The world no. 6 had begun this year’s Wimbledon campaign with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Magdalena Frech in round 1 and then she handed Zhuoxuan Bai a 6-1, 6-1 drubbing in round 2.

In the third round, Jabeur rebounded from a set down to beat Bianca Andreescu 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, while in the fourth round she trounced the ninth seed Petra Kvitova 6-0, 6-3.

This will be the third Grand Slam final that Jabeur will be competing in. Last year, in addition to losing the final at SW19, she also finished runner-up at the U.S. Open, going down to Iga Swiatek in straight sets.

A four-time tour level champion, Jabeur has played in just one final this year, triumphing at the Charleston Open. On Saturday, she will be competing in a 12th career final. Can she win her maiden Grand Slam title?

Vondrousova Powers Past Svitolina

Marketa Vondrousova marched into her second Grand Slam final with a straight sets win over Elina Svitolina on Thursday.

The wold no. 42 became the first unseeded woman to reach the singles final at the All England Club in the Open Era. She is also the second lowest-ranked player to reach the Wimbledon final since the WTA rankings were introduced. Serena Williams (at no. 181) is the lowest ranked player to have played the final in 2018.

Vondrousova was dominant for most parts of the semifinal on Thursday. She took the opening set without much fuss and then built a 0-4 lead as Svitolina’s game dropped considerably after a decent start. But given the fighter the Ukrainian is, she refused to surrender and tried to make a valiant comeback by getting both the breaks back and winning three games in a row.

But just when it seemed the momentum was shifting towards the Ukrainian, Vondrousova broke again and then served out the match in the next game for a 6-3, 6-3 victory.

It has been an incredible run for Vondrousova at the All England Club as she had come into the tournament with a losing career record on grass. The lefty however, has turned things around over the fortnight. First she defeated Peyton Stearns 6-2, 7-5 in the first round and then she defeated four seed in a row. Vondrousova beat 12th seed Veronika Kudermetova 6-3, 6-3 in the second and no. 20 seed Donna Vekic 6-1, 7-5 in the third round. She was stretched in her next two matches, but still managed to beat compatriot and 32nd seed Marie Bouzkova 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 in the round of 16 and fourth seed Jessica Pegula 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 in the quarterfinal.

The win over a former Wimbledon semifinalist in the semifinal was also a fine achievement for Vondrousova, who will be competing in her second major final on Saturday. Her first was at Roland Garros in 2019, when she went down to Ash Barty in straight sets.

Vondrousova is also the Tokyo Olympics silver medallist and will be playing in her sixth career final on Saturday. Interestingly she has won just one of her five finals so far and that was at the Ladies Open Biel Bienne in Switzerland in 2017.Can she win her second career title and her maiden Grand slam title?

Jabeur v Vondrousova Prediction and Tip

Jabeur is the favourite. She has a better record in finals, while Vondrousova tends to show nerves in title clashes. This is also Jabeur’s second straight Wimbledon final and a third in a Grand Slam tournament, so the previous experiences will come in handy. Lastly, Jabeur is a fantastic grass court player and all these factors make her the favourite to win the title.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Jabeur to win: 1/3
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 26.5 games in the match: 5/6
