Novak Djokovic is one win away from equalling Roger Federer’s record of most number of Wimbledon titles on Sunday. The world no. 2 eased past Jannik Sinner in the semifinal on Friday to reach the 35th Grand Slam final of his career.

The Serb is 7-1 in Wimbledon finals and has won the last four editions in a row from 2018 to 2022. Federer, with eight titles, has the most number of titles at the grass court major. While Djokovic is second in the list tied with Pete Sampras.

In the semifinal on Friday, Djokovic won the first two sets without much trouble, but faced some stiff resistance from the the eighth seed in the third set. Djokovic saved two set points on his serve in the 10th game before edging past the Italian in the tiebreak for a 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) in two hours and 47 minutes.

It was Djokovic’s 34th consecutive win at Wimbledon, with the series of wins beginning in 2018. This year, Djokovic began his campaign with a 6-3, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) win over Pedro Cachín in the first round and then followed it up with a 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), 7-5 victory over Jordan Thompson. He then recorded his 21st win over old rival Stan Wawrinka, winning the third round match 6-3, 6-1, 7-6 (7-5).

Hubert Hurkacz was the first player to take a set of Djokovic in this year’s Wimbledon, but the Serb eventually won the fourth round contest 7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (8-6), 5-7, 6-4. He also won his quarterfinal match in four sets, beating the seventh seed Andrey Rublev 4-6, 6-1, 6-4, 6-3.

World no. 1 Carlos Alcaraz reached his first Wimbledon final after he knocked out third seed Daniil Medvedev in straight sets on Friday.

Alcaraz, who has been in tremendous form this season, extended his season record to 46-4 following Friday’s win, which includes an 11-0 record on grass.

Alcaraz will be featuring in his seventh final of the season on Sunday. He is 5-1 from his six finals, winning the titles in Buenos Aires, Indian Wells, Barcelona, Madrid and Queen’s

The Spaniard had not even reached the quarterfinals in his two previous Wimbledon appearances, but this year the 20-year-old has been playing at a high level, which has aided him reach the final. Alcaraz began his campaign with a 6-0, 6-2, 7-5 win over Jérémy Chardy in the first round, before beating Alexandre Müller 6-4, 7-6 (7-2), 6-3 in round 2.

He was tested by Nicolas Jarry in the third round, but he edged out the Chilean 6-3, 6-7 (6-8), 6-3, 7-5 and then rallied from a set down to beat former finalist Matteo Berrettini 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, 6-3 in the round of 16.

Alcaraz then dumped out the promising Holger Rune 7-6 (7-3), 6-4, 6-4 in the quarterfinal, before scoring another straight sets win in the semifinal, beating the world no. 3, 6-3, 6-3, 6-3. Alcaraz saved 2 of 4 break points and converted 6 of 14 to breeze past the Russian.

He will be appearing in his 15th career final and his second Grand Slam final on Sunday. The 11-time tour level champion won his only major final at the U.S. Open last year. Can he remain perfect in major finals?

It’s a final that everyone’s been looking forward to. Both Djokovic and Alcaraz have played some outstanding tennis over the fortnight and therefore it promises to be a cracking finale. However, the vastly experienced Djokovic will be the favourite. He has a stupendous record in Grand Slams and will be eager to win his 24th major and equal the great Federer at Wimbledon.
