Wawrinka Coming off Wimbledon Third Round

While Wawrinka might never recapture the glory of his past which had seen him climb up to the third rank on the ATP charts and win Grand Slams, he sure has had a better season than the previous one.

And as a result of that, Wawrinka had managed to climb up to 88th in the world having hit a ranking of 361st last season. In fact, earlier this year, Wawrinka was 78th, his best ranking since November 2021 and as a result of his performance at Wimbledon will kick-start this tournament on his new ranking of 74th.

Wawrinka enters these few tournaments on clay before the US Open Series begins on the back of a solid showing at Wimbledon where he made the third round. He also put up a fight against Novak Djokovic but the Serb found a way past him in straight sets in the end.

On clay, Wawrinka has a 6-6 record this year but he enters this competition for the first time since 2013. Having made the final here in 2005, Wawrinka will hope he can carve a run for himself this time too.

Baena Falls Early at Salzburg

Opting to take part on the Challenger circuit after losing in the second round at Wimbledon, Baena stumbled out of the clay court competition in Salzburg in the very first round last week.

He was beaten in straight sets by 32-year-old Blaz Rola, which was a surprising result given the kind of form Baena has been all season on clay. So much so, he had gone into that encounter as a 1/4 favourite.

To give an example of Baena’s form, he had won just his second career ATP title earlier this season when he lifted the Marrakesh Open after winning four of the five matches there in fighting three-setters.

Since that title win though, Baena has been 5-5 on clay. He followed that up with a 2-2 record on grass before losing in that Salzburg Challenger.

Can he put up a fight here?
