Podoroska Back on Favourite Surface

Having reached the semifinal of the 2020 French Open after starting out as a qualifier, Podoroska had established herself as one of the better players on clay.

In more recent times, however, she hasn’t quite found the going as easy and that has resulted in the fall of her rankings from her original 36th in the world to her current 80th.

She enters this tournament on the back of a second round appearance at Wimbledon after having stunned Tereza Martincova in the opener. Before that, she had also made the semifinal of a WTA 125 event on clay in Valencia but her 2023 season hasn’t been filled with a lot of stories of positive results on her favourite surface.

Because of her ranking, Podoroska hasn’t been able to feature in too many WTA events either, and when she has done so, she has fallen in early rounds – like her opening losses in Madrid and Rome and a second round defeat at the French Open.

The question now is if she can make it past Hunter to win her first WTA match on clay since the French Open.

Hunter Improving Through the Season

Having hit a rather low rank of 245th in February this year, Hunter has improved to 154th right now thanks to her 20-8 win-loss record for the season. Most of these wins have come in the qualifiers of tournaments and at the ITF level but Hunter has shown she is capable of making things happen.

At Wimbledon, which was the last tournament Hunter played, the Aussie made it past Elina Avanesyan and Nao Hibino to enter the main draw. She would have hoped to do a lot better than her 6-3, 6-1 loss to Wang Xinyu though.

Before that Hunter hadn’t played in any grass event, having featured at the French Open.

Again, it had needed her to win three successive qualifiers to make the main draw before she sent Nuria Parrizas-Diaz packing in the first round. The Aussie also managed to take a set off Elina Svitolina before losing in three.

Hunter hasn’t done too well on clay before this season but in 2023 has shown she has a steady game that can take advantage of her opponent’s mistakes on this surface.

Podoroska v Hunter Prediction and Tip

Podoroska will have to be at her best if she wants to live up to the 3/5 odds on offer for her win. Backing her for the victory but could take a while.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Podoroska to win: 3/5
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 21.5 games in the match: 5/6
