Kaja Juvan v Astra Sharma Head to Head

There has been one previous meeting between these two players and it had come on the clay courts of the WTA Bol in 2019. Juvan had won that 6-1, 6-0.

Juvan Overpowers Kucova

She was always the favourite going into her opening round encounter against Kristina Kucova and in the end, Juvan came through in straight sets.

What needs to be looked at, however, is the fact that despite being a 1/8 favourite, Juvan was pushed to the corner in the opening set. This follows her struggles in the previous qualifying round against Valeriya Strakhova in which she was a 1/17 favourite and was taken to three sets.

Juvan was on court for an hour and 27 minutes and was broken three times in the encounter with her second serve statistics reading a measely 39% of the points won. It was her opponent’s poor serving that allowed her to get past her serve on six occasions and in turn, win the match.

What’s interesting to note is that Juvan hadn’t won a match at the highest level on clay this season before this. That by itself should give her a bit of confidence as she takes on a player ranked outside the top 200 in round two.

Sharma Shocks Rakkhimova

Much like Juvan, Sharma had also entered the main draw of this competition on the back of successive qualifying wins but she was up against Kamilla Rakhimova in her opener. And Rakhimova was a 3/5 favourite to make the second round.

Which is why a 6-3, 6-3 rout of Rakhimova in the first round makes for a cheery result for the Aussie, who was playing in only her second WTA main draw match of the season. She had lost the first.

In a match lasting an hour and 38 minutes, Sharma faced just two break-points and was broken once but once she had come back from 1-3 down in the opening set, there was no looking back.

Rakhimova’s game fell away as Sharma broke right back and then made it three breaks in a row to win the opening set. She followed that streak with a fourth successive break in the second set and while from that point onward, Rakhimova did not allow any more break-points on her serve, she failed to get past Sharma’s serve either.

Can Sharma now double her WTA win count for the season?

Juvan v Sharma Prediction and Tip

Juvan starts off a 3/5 favourite much like Rakhimova had done against Sharma in the first round. And we know how that match went. This, however, could go in Juvan’s favour.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Juvan to win: 3/5
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 21.5 games in the match: 5/6
