Rublev Coming off Wimbledon Quarterfinal

Having reached the quarterfinal at Wimbledon, Rublev has opted not to continue playing on grass and instead looked to transition to clay.

He had a first round bye here and enters the tournament on the back of a solid season on clay on which he won 14 matches to go with his four defeats.

This included a title win at the Monte-Carlo Masters – his maiden Masters victory – following which he also made the final at the Banja Luka Open. What was looking like an excellent time on clay did not end too well.

Well, it wasn’t too bad but Rublev would have hoped for a better showing than fourth round exits at the Madrid and Rome Masters and a third round ouster at the French Open. This will be his chance to go deeper than that.

Qualifier Kotov Sends Cecchinato Packing

Having scraped through to the main draw of this competition with a difficult straight-set win and a third-set victory after that, Kotov did not waste any time in getting through to the second round.

Kotov, who is currently at his career-best ranking of 89th in the world, routed Marco Cecchinato in his opener to continue his good form for this season.

In a match lasting a mere one hour, Kotov won 6-1, 6-2 as he claimed a whopping six breaks of serves over his opponent. A first serve stat of 73% of the points won as opposed to a mere 35% for Cecchinato proved to be the difference between the two players.

This follows a season in which Kotov has made it to the semifinal at the Marrakesh Open and a quarterfinal in Mallorca. Can he put up a showing against the world number seven?
