Schmiedlova Overcomes Kudermetova

Anna Karolina Schmiedlova made a winning start at the Budapest event beating Polina Kudermetova in the opening round. It was a solid performance from the Slovakian in her return to clay and it was largely expected. She does play her best tennis on clay with an 8-5 record on the surface this year.

Overall, her season has been pretty solid with a 17-16 record but she can certainly play even better than this. Her form hasn’t been that great leading up to this event but she won comfortably in the opening round 6-2 6-0 to get back to winning ways.

The matchup against Korpatsch is a complicated one as she had some trouble with it in the past. She’s beaten the German but also lost the previous time they played against each other.

Right now she seems to be playing a bit better so she’s the minor favourite before this one.

Korpatsch Downs Grammatikopoulou

Tamara Korpatsch is a really solid tennis player, one capable of winning matches on all surfaces. Traditionally, clay has been her strongest surface even though this year it hasn’t been anything spectacular. She’s just 9-8 on the surface after going 33-10 last year.

More broadly the season has generally been a weak one for Korpatch who has a combined record of 12-19 on all surfaces.

She can certainly play much better but something is just not working. Her playstyle is quite aggressive but she goes from consistent to inconsistent rather quickly. That’s a major issue, especially as she’s facing a player who enjoys trading blows from the baseline.

Overall it’s going to be a complicated match for her and she’ll need to outplay Schmiedlova from the baseline if she hopes to win.

Schmiedlova v Korpatsch Prediction and Tip

Overall I do think that Schmiedlova is the better player and she looked a bit more impressive in the first round. I’ll back her two in here.

Tips:

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Schmiedlova to win: 4/6
