Maria Struggles Past French Opponent

Maria came into this tournament still carrying some disappointment over from Wimbledon where she singularly failed to match last year’s semi-final heroics, losing in the first round this time.

And that may perhaps explain why she had her struggles in her first round match with Carole Monnet of France, the world number 185.

After the match began with the pair both dropping serve, another break was enough to earn Monnet the first set.

Maria improved at the start of the second set, and raced into a four game lead, only for that quickly to unravel as Monnet clawed them all back.

And when another Maria dropped serve gave Monnet the chance to serve for the match, a upset was on the cards.

The German though, used all her experience to break back and take it to a tie-break, where again her greater know-how allowed her to win it and level the match.

Monnet’s head began to drop, and she was broken early in the third set,  Another break finally put Maria in a position where she could serve out.

Wildcard Stollar Beats Spanish Qualifier

Stollar is much better known as a doubles player – she is a former Wimbledon junior champion, and she has reached the final in Budapest on three previous occasions, winning it twice, in 2018 and 2021.

Singles-wise her achievements have been largely limited to the junior tours, but now she is celebrating a rare main draw win after being given a wildcard into the tournament this year.

In truth, she could have faced a harder opponent than the Spaniard Irene Burillo Escorihuela, ranked 237th in the world, but people can only beat what is in front of them.

The Hungarian actually suffered the first break of the match, but levelled only to fall a break behind again. However, she then rallied, saved two set breaks, and then turned the first set on its head with two further breaks of her own.

The pair swapped breaks at the start of the second set, and again two games later. But with the Spaniard serving to stay in the match, Stollar forced a match point which she duly converted.

Maria v Stollar Prediction and Tip

For all Maria’s struggles in her first round match, she should be much too strong for the Hungarian, for whom just being in the second round of a WTA tournament is an achievement in itself.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Maria to win: 1/5
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Under 19.5 games in the match: 5/6
