Bucsa Bounces Back to Beat Curmi
Cristina Bucsa lost the opening set against Francesca Curmi in a first round match in Palermo on Tuesday, but she fought back over the next two sets to win the contest and move to the second round.
Bucsa, ranked no. 81st in the world, was stretched to the hilt by the world no. 326, who became the first player from Malta to play in the main draw of a WTA event.
There were plenty of breaks in the match with Bucsa saving just one of 10 break points, and converting 10 of 15 to seal the two-hour-and-six-minute contest 3-6, 6-3, 7-5.
Bucsa improved her season record to 18-17 across levels and 7-7 on clay.
The Spaniard’s best this year saw her reach the third round of the Australian Open as a qualifier. She also made it to the second round of the Indian Wells Open, again after making it to the main draw through the qualifiers.
She was a quarterfinalist at the WTA 125 in Contrexeville last week and will be looking to reach her first WTA quarterfinal of the season on Wednesday.

Burel Tops Eighth Seed Grabher
Facing Bucsa in the second round will be France’s Clara Burel, who topped eighth seed Julia Grabher 6-4, 7-5 in the first round.
Ranked no. 94th in the world, Burel won 74% points on her first serve, saved 5 of 9 break points and converted to 6 of 11 to beat the world no. 58 in an hour and 39 minutes.
Burel, who was beaten in the first round on her Palermo debut last year, improved to 12-6 on clay and 20-11 overall this season. She had won the Montpellier ITF title earlier this month by beating Astra Sharma in the final.
However, at the tour level, it was a run to the semifinals in Strasbourg that turned out to be her best so far this year.
The 22-year-old is at her best on clay and her only WTA final came on the surface in Lausanne two years ago, when she finished runner-up.
Bucsa v Burel Prediction and Tip
Both are good players on clay. However, Burel is in fantastic form this month and is 7-1 from all her matches in July. Therefore, expect this to go down the wire with Burel making it to the last eight.
