Last year’s semifinalist Sara Sorribes Tormo reached the second round of this year’s Palermo Open with a three-set win over Elisabetta Cocciaretto on Tuesday.
The Spaniard was dominant in the first set, but Cocciaretto clawed her way back in the second, getting a decisive third break after both had broken each other twice each earlier in the set. With the match tied at one set apiece, the third set was expected to be a close one, but it turned out to be a one-sided one as Sorribes Tormo raced to victory by bagelling the Italian.
The two hour and 43 minute match ended with Sorribes Tormo winning 6-3, 4-6, 6-0.
Sorribes Tormo saved 7 of 12 break points in the match and converted 9 of 16 to beat the world no. 42.
The Spaniard has played a lot on clay this year and she is 13-7 across levels on the surface. Overall she improved to 15-8 in 2023, which includes a runner-up finish in an ITF event in Madrid.
Sorribes Tormo, who made it to the fourth round at the French Open, has featured in just one WTA quarterfinal this year and that was in Bogota. Can she reach her second of the season on Wednesday?

Brancaccio Continues to Impress
Qualifier Nuria Brancaccio continued to impress at home as she knocked out Tessah Andrianjafitrimo of France in straight sets on Monday.
Ranked no. 180 in the world, Brancaccio saved 8 of 12 break points and capitalised on 7 of 13 breaking opportunities to beat the fellow qualifier 6-3, 6-4 in an hour and 54 minutes.
Brancaccio had qualified for the main draw with a straight sets drubbing of Quinn Gleason in the first qualifying round and then she powered past compatriot Deborah Chiesa in the second qualifying round.
Like Sorribes Tormo, Brancaccio too was a quarterfinalist in Bogota.
The Italian improved to 25-16 across levels this year. She won an ITF event and finished runner-up in another. Both the tournaments were played on clay in Buenos Aires in January.
It will be interesting to see if she can give the Spaniard a close fight.
Sorribes Tormo v Brancaccio Prediction and Tip
Sorribes Tormo is the more experienced player at this level and she did well in Palermo last year as well. Expect her to build on the start that she had against the fourth seed.
