World no. 74 Camila Osorio of Colombia knocked out Fiona Ferro of France in straight sets on Wednesday to reach the second round of the Palermo Open.
After both players broke each other thrice each in the first set, Osorio dominated the tiebreak to take a one-set-to-love lead.
She then raced to victory in the second by breaking her opponent three more times in the match. The one hour and 41 minute contest ended with Osorio beating the world no. 256, 7-6 (7-2), 6-1.
With the win, Osorio improved her season record to 20-11 across levels, with most of her wins coming on clay — her preferred surface. Osorio is 13-5 on the surface. Some of her most notable performances this year included a run from qualifiers to the fourth round in Rome and a third round finish in Madrid. She also made it to the second round in Roland Garros.
However, overall, she produced her best result of 2023 in Lyon, where she was a semifinalist.
Osorio, who has a 1-2 record in WTA finals, will be aiming to reach her second tour-level quarterfinal on Thursday.

Andreeva Stuns Bronzetti
World no. 159 Erika Andreeva fought back from a set down to stun Italy’s Lucia Bronzetti in the first round on Wednesday.
Andreeva was the first to break in the match in the fourth game. But Bronzetti made an immediate comeback, winning four games in a row. She successfully protected the advantage and took the first set.
The 19-year-old turned the tables on the home favourite in the second set as she bagelled the Italian to force the decider. Bronzetti was off to a good start in the third set though, breaking Andreeva in the third game of the set, but the Russian raised her game from that point on and won five in a row to seal the match 4-6, 6-0, 6-2.
This is the fourth time at the tour level that Andreeva has reached the second round this year. Can she reach her first WTA quarterfinal of the year on Thursday?
