Blown away in the first set, Nadia Podoroska bounced back to beat Storm Hunter in the first round of the Budapest Open on Tuesday.

After conceding a 0-2 lead in the first set, Podoroska pulled the break back in the third game but lost the next four games in a row to to lose the first set. However, the world no. 80 roared back in the contest in the second set, breaking Hunter twice to tie the match at one set apiece.

She continued to dominate in the third set and broke the Australian thrice to complete a 1-6, 6-1, 6-1 victory.

Podoroska, who was a French Open semifinalist in 2020, has had a tough time at the tour level this season, but she is 24-20 across levels. Her best came in Cali, Colombia this year, where she won her first ever WTA 125 title.

The 26-year-old has made some deep runs in lower level tournaments, but will be aiming to reach her first tour level quarterfinal of the season on Thursday.

World no. 377 Anna Siskova made a strong start in the tournament with a straight sets win over world no 290 Evgeniya Rodina.

Making her WTA main draw debut, Siskova dropped just three games in the match and won the last nine games in a row to complete a 6-3, 6-0 victory over the Australian.

The 22-year-old Czech won 84% points on her first serve and converted 5 of 15 break points, while failing to save the only break point that she faced in the first set.

Siskova had made it to the main draw with back-to-back three-set wins over Lena Papadakis and Maria Timofeeva respectively.

Siskova improved her season record to 23-18 across levels and is 13-10 on clay. Can she reach her first ever WTA quarterfinal with a win on Thursday?
