Sonego on Three-Match Losing Streak

Lorenzo Sonego had a bye in the first round by virtue of being one of the top-seeded players in the main draw in Gstaad, and will therefore open his campaign in the round of 16 against Albert Ramos Vinolas.

Sonego has lost three matches in a row for the second time this season. Worryingly for the Italian, he has picked up two wins in four tournaments on grass and he’ll be hoping to resuscitate his campaign in Gstaad.

His record in the Swiss city is not the best. He lost both main draw appearances he played in his previous two visits, once to Thomas Fabbiano and last year to Juan Pablo Varillas.

Sonego was last seen in action at Wimbledon where he fell in four sets to compatriot Matteo Berrettini in the first round.

Prior to the grass swing, the Italian reached the second week of Roland Garros for the second time, mastering wins over Ugo Humbert and Andrey Rublev. Can the 28-year-old return to winning ways?

Ramos Vinolas Earns Rare Win Over Fognini

Albert Ramos Vinolas scored a rare win over Italy’s Fabio Fognini in the opening round, doing so in three sets.

With a 10-2 record in the head-to-head, Ramos Vinolas narrowed the deficit a bit, by earning his third win in the series in deserved fashion.

Fognini’s lack of game time was evident as he dropped his serve three times in a one-sided first set. There was nothing particularly special from the Spaniard’s end, but this was all on the Italian imploding dramatically.

Fognini couldn’t play worse than he did in the first set. And the mercurial Italian produced an excellent reaction in the second set where he won a lengthy fifth game to break, taking his 7th break point in that game and going on to consolidate for a 4-2 lead. Another break did the trick in the subsequent game and needed six set points to level the match.

But down the stretch, it was Ramos Vinolas who had the legs and physical endurance to win the match. He got a double break to lead 5-0, and with such a monstrous lead, the Spanish lefty finished off the match with a love break.

Sonego v Ramos Vinolas Prediction and Tip

There is great value in taking Ramos Vinolas to earn at least a set. He has a winning record over Lorenzo Sonego, and the Italian could be caught cold in his first match back on clay.
