Bernabe Zapata Miralles earned a much-needed first ATP win since Geneva in May. He defeated Bolivian qualifier Hugo Dellien 6-3, 7-6 in an hour and 36 minutes of play.
The Spaniard’s recent slump saw him exit the world’s top 50 and turned to the Challenger Tour this past week in an effort to end his five-match losing streak on the ATP Tour.
And the confidence and wins he attained in Iasi, Romania, proved vital in Zapata Miralles asserting authority in rallies and combating Dellien’s aggression. Dellien was running out of fumes after playing a couple of three-set matches in qualifying.
Both players didn’t start spectacularly as they exchanged breaks to open the match. But Zapata Miralles was getting enough purchase behind the return and was 40-0 on Dellien’s serve in the sixth game, eventually breaking on his second attempt. The world No. 53 coolly saw off the set in 39 minutes.
In the second set, there was another quick exchange of breaks. But at 4-4, Zapata Miralles wasted a break point that would have put the match on his racket. It didn’t matter though as he would dominate Dellien in the tiebreak.

Sebastian Ofner’s season keeps getting better. A few days after capturing his first title of 2023 at the Salzburg Challenger, he earned his fourth ATP win of the season.
Ofner did not show any weariness or fatigue, as he took down Roland Garros quarterfinalist Tomas Martin Etcheverry 4-6, 6-1, 7-5 in two hours and three minutes of action.
It was on his Bastad debut and it also extends his winning streak to six matches. Ofner improves to 39-16 across all levels this season.
He was the big underdog in the match at 2/1, but rallied from dropping a tight opening set. He broke Etcheverry’s serve four times (twice in sets 2 and 3).
The Austrian fired six aces to three double faults. He had a better ratio of points won behind his first serve with 76%, and saved an impressive six of eight break points.

Ofner is on a hot streak right now and it looks like he is reaping the reward for chipping away at his ranking on Challenger tournaments. He is rightly the favorite here.
