Kasatkina Rolls Into Fifth Quarterfinal of 2023

Daria Kasatkina showed little empathy to fellow compatriot Tatiana Prozorova, laying waste to the 19-year-old qualifier 6-3, 6-1 in an hour and 26 minutes.

Kasatkina who also came through her opening match in three sets, but very routinely, broke her young opponent five times in 15 opportunities and this appeared to be a massive step up in quality for Prozorova to contend with.

While she showed some admirable resilience to claw a huge deficit in the first set from 5-1, she was just not able to pick her spots on serve.

Kasatkina dominated the second set, winning 54% return points behind Prozorova’s first serve and an even healthier 86% second-serve points. Prozorova failed to hold for the entire set, and the lone game she won, was an absolute gift by Kasaktina’s part.

The top seed rolls into her fifth quarterfinal and is still chasing her first WTA title of the season this week.

Paolini, Lone Italian Remaining

Jasmine Paolini is now the sole Italian remaining in the singles draw in Palermo after most of her much-fancied compatriots bowed out of the tournament before the quarterfinals.

The World No. 52 reached the semifinals of this event last year, but it would be a major shock if she can reprise that result.

However, she will be buoyed by her performances this week, managing to weather the storm, against two excellent clay court players.

Paolini escaped with a  three-set win over an in-form Arantxa Rus who was on a 10-match winning run following titles in Haag and Contrexeville. And then on Thursday, she rallied from a set down to beat Dayana Yastremska who is still shaken from the recent air attacks on her hometown Odesa.

After sharing the first two sets, Paolini was the more consistent ball striker in the decider, reeling Yastremska into a myriad of errors and breaking her serve twice. She served for a place in the semifinals to love.

Kasatkina v Paolini Prediction and Tip

Paolini owns a win over Kasatkina at this very tournament from three years ago – Kasatkina’s only previous visit to Palermo. But the Russian looks dialed in this week, and not is she the outright favorite to win this match, but the whole tournament.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Kasatkina to win: 1/2
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Kasatkina to win in straight sets: 6/5
