Kateryna Baindl needed just an hour and 18 minutes to cruise past Hungary’s Amarissa Kiara Tóth in the second round of the Budapest Open on Thursday.

Baindl raced to a 4-0 lead in the first set, but Toth make a mini comeback by winning three games in a row. The Ukrainian however took the last two games to close out the opening set. She then went on to dominate the second set and won five consecutive games to win the contest 6-3, 6-1.

Baindl had even won her first round match in straight sets, beating another Hungarian Natalia Szabanin 6-4, 7-5. Now she faces a third Hungarian in a row on Friday.

Ranked no. 100, Baindl will be featuring in her third quarterfinal in Budapest. She is yet to reach the final four, having bowed out of the last eight stage in 2019 and 2021.

It will be Baindl’s first tour level quarterfinal of the season. She did reach the last eight stage once before, but that was in a WTA 125 tournament in Makarska.

Stollar Stuns Maria

World no. 441 Fanny Stollar saved two match points before upsetting the fifth seed Tatjana Maria  on Thursday. She is now the only Hungarian left in the Budapest Open 2023.

Stollar started off well, taking the opening set with ease, but Maria made a strong comeback in the second to send the match into the final set. Stollar came back from a break down twice in the final set to keep her chances alive and then bounced back from 4-6 down in the deciding set tiebreak to claim an incredible 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (8-6) victory.

Stollar won six points fewer than Maria’s 101 in the match, but advanced to the quarterfinal as she won the crucial moments in the match and showed nerves of steel in the final set tiebreak.

Stollar had begun her Budapest Challenger with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Irene Burillo Escorihuela in the opening round.

The Hungarian has only played at the ITF level tournaments this year, and has a 12-7 record on clay, which is impressive.
