Zheng Beats Navarro In Late-Night Finish

Qinwen Zheng and Emma Navarro were on the court at almost midnight local time because of a thrilling three-set match between home favorite Jasmine Paolini and Daria Kasatkina that dragged for too long.

Zheng, however, wasted little time in taking down the in-form American, winning 6-4, 6-2 in an hour and 20 minutes,

The Chinese star has enjoyed a decent season in spite of an injury-ravaged month after Dubai in February. She converted three of her seven break points in the match, while saving two on her own serve.

Zheng has only dropped one set this week, which was in the round of 16 match against Diane Parry. Saturday’s semifinal is her first at WTA level outside hard courts.

Zheng will also be chasing her first WTA final since September last year when she finished runner-up at the Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo.

Sherif Too Good for Fatigued Osorio

Mayar Sherif and Camila Osorio were at equal odds in Friday’s quarterfinal match, but on the court, the Egyptian star was vastly superior.

Sadly the match did not live up to expectations between two excellent clay court players. That is because the Colombian was running empty after her late-night win over Erika Andreeva that finished past midnight.

Less than 18 hours after the win, Osorio was back in action taking on an in-form Sherif, winner of two WTA 125 titles in the past month.

Although the first set was competitive, Sherif established clear daylight in the score in set 2. The Egpytian trailblazer took four of her seven break points in the match, with Osorio tallying a woeful 34% first-serve points won.

Sherif was also able to save all four break points on her own serve to round off a 6-4, 6-1 win. Should she beat Zheng on Saturday, she will contest her fourth final across all levels in 2023.

Zheng v Sherif Prediction and Tip

Sherif clearly benefitted from playing a fatigued opponent in the quarterfinal, and Zheng was well aware of not falling into that trap, getting a quick win over Emma Navarro on Friday night. While Sherif stands a good chance as any to beat the higher-ranked Chinese, Zheng is rightly the favorite here.

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Zheng to win: 8/13
