Etcheverry Shocked in Bastad Opener

Etcheverry broke into the top 30 of the ATP Rankings in more recent times and that has been thanks to his performance on clay.

In fact, the Argentine has done well on clay all his life but only recently was able to convert that form into something substantial when it comes to results too.

He made the final of the Santiago Open earlier this year where he lost to Nicolas Jarry before repeating the same in the next clay court competition he featured in at Houston. This time it was Frances Tiafoe who took him out.

While Etcheverry would have liked to do better than he did in Barcelona, Madrid and Rome – finishing 3-3 on win-loss there – he came back with a bang at the French Open after that. Wins over Borna Coric and Alex de Minaur helped him make the quarterfinal there – his best showing at a Grand Slam.

Etcheverry will most likely shrug off the Bastad loss as one of those things that happen when you play enough and will hope to get back to his winning ways.

Djere Loses Gstaad Opener

Much like Etcheverry, even Djere did not have a great time in the first round of the clay court tournament he featured in.

Djere, who had registered a fourth round spot at the Rome Masters earlier this year as his best showing for the season, fell away in his opener to Zizou Bergs. Bergs had gone into the match at 23/10 odds to overcome his Serbian opponent.

What makes things slightly more difficult for Djere is his overall clay record for the season isn’t as remarkable as Etcheverry either.

Sure there was a fourth round appearance at the Rome Masters and a couple of other tournaments in which he won successive matches, but he hasn’t shown any other sparkle.

Which is also why against a player of the capabilities of Etcheverry, things won’t get any easy for Djere.

Etcheverry v Djere Prediction and Tip

Etcheverry starts off a 3/5 favourite in this encounter and we will be backing him to come through and make the second round. Might even be done in two sets.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Etcheverry to win: 3/5
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Etcheverry to win in straight sets: 6/4
