Burrage at Career-Best

It’s taken her time to grow on the rankings chart but for the first time in her career, British player Burrage has broken into the top 100 of the rankings.

That has a big implication on how a player’s career goes especially now that she can start getting direct entries into not just the Grand Slams but also at some of the WTA 1000 events (if she can nudge up even a little further in her rankings).

Burrage’s turnaround came on grass this season when she reached the final of the Nottingham Open. Wins over Tereza Martincova, Magda Linette, Magdalena Frech and Alize Cornet would have not just given her the ranking points but also drilled a certain sense of confidence in her that she belongs.

The Brit followed that up with second round appearances at both Eastbourne and Wimbledon and enters this hardcourt competition in Warsaw after having made the ITF quarterfinals on the same surface last week.

She has a fairly routine first round encounter in front of her by the looks of things.

Raina Makes a Rare Main Draw Appearance

Having never been better than 160th in the world, the now-200th-ranked Raina has entered the main draw of this tournament on the back of successive qualifying victories.

She overcame Olivia Lincer and Joanna Garland to make the first round, in what is a rare achievement.

The 30-year-old took a while before she even won her main draw match at the highest level, defeating Elisabetta Cocciaretto in January 2021 in Melbourne.

Unfortunately for Raina, she had ended 2021 on a poor note form-wise and has not been able to turn that around again. That can be seen from the fact this is her first WTA 250 main draw appearance for the season with her best result before this coming in the WTA 125 tournament in Florence.

There she had beaten Elina Avanesyan in the opener before losing to Sara Errani.

Can she upset the 1/4 favourite Brit here?

Burrage v Raina Prediction and Tip

Raina’s poor record in recent times makes Burrage the favourite but the Indian has done well in hardcourt competitions at the lower level. Can she take that form further here?

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Games Handicap Raina +5.5: 8/11
