Two-Time Winner de Minaur Resumes Hardcourt Tennis

Having been knocked out of Wimbledon in the second round, de Minaur will kick-start his defence of the Atlanta Open title with a tough second round match.

De Minaur, who had a first round bye, will take on his fellow countryman who can make life difficult for most opponents and having never faced him in a competitive match before could make him an even more intriguing opponent for the world number 17.

The last time de Minaur played a hardcourt competition was at the Sunshine Masters and he had entered those two tournaments in Indian Wells and Miami on the back of a title win in Acapulco. Strangely though, de Minaur lost in the first round at both despite being a 3/10 favourite in his openers at those two.

He would go on to regain some semblance of form at the Queen’s competition later this year only to get knocked out from Wimbledon that early.

Kokkinakis Scrapes Past Monfils in a Thriller

It took Kokkinakis more than two hours but more vitally it took him a third set tie-breaker to overcome Gael Monfils in his opening round win here.

The 86th-ranked player came back from a set down to win 1-6, 6-3, 7-6 (5) in a topsy-turvy encounter that saw neither player give the other an inch. In fact, Kokkinakis earned a mere two break-points in the match and won just one break of serve while getting broken twice.

In the final set, the two players were so good with their serves there were no break-points earned by either player and it was only a close tie-breaker that saw Kokkinakis edge ahead.

This follows a poor run of results for Kokkinakis before this in which he had lost both his grass court matches and crashed out of the second round in Granby in a Challenger match.

Can he put up as strong challenge to de Minaur here?
