The quarterfinal action at the 2023 Lausanne Open will see second seed Elisabetta Cocciaretto take on eighth seed Elina Avanesyan and third seed Ana Bogdan play Clara Burel. Head-to-Head: Cocciaretto leads 1-0, having won their only meeting in the San Luis Potosi 125 semifinal this year.

Second seed Elisabetta Cocciaretto moved into the quarterfinals of the Lausanne Open with a second straight three set win in the tournament.

The Italian, world no. 42, who had comeback from a set down to beat Celine Naef of Switzerland 3-6, 7-6 (7-1), 6-2, needed two hours and 38 minutes to beat Argentina’s Julia Riera 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 in the second round on Wednesday.

The 22-year-old Italian, who was a runner-up in Hobart this season and a winner in WTA 125 in San Luis Potosi, will be playing in her fourth tour level quarterfinal of the season and a fifth, including the one in San Luis Potosi.

Playing Cocciaretto will be world no. 68 Elina Avanesyan, who bounced back from a set down to beat France’s Chloé Paquet 2-6, 7-5, 6-1.

The eighth seed Russian had won her first round contest against Evgeniya Rodina, who retired while trailing 2-6, 0-2.  The 20-year-old will be playing her third WTA quarterfinal of the season. She also made it to the fourth round of the French Open and won an ITF title on clay.

Cocciaretto is the higher ranked player and has also done well at the top level, but Avanesyan has been more consistent on clay and has also produced better results in recent encounters. Expect this to be a close contest with Avanesyan edging through. Avanesyan to win: 5/4

Ana Bogdan v Clara Burel Preview

Head-to-Head: It is 1-1 from their two meetings and both the meetings happened this year, with Burel winning in Lyon and Bogdan in Dubai qualifier.

Third seed Ana Bogdan made it to the last eight stage in Lausanne with a three set win over Slovenia’s Dalila Jakupović. It was a second three-set win for the Romanain in the tournament. She had scored a come-from-behind win over Simona Waltert in the first round, beating the Swiss 2-6, 6-3, 6-3.

In the round of 16, the world no. 39 bageled the Slovenian in the first set, then missed out on three match points in the second set, before losing it to the world no. 237. But she edged out Jakupović in the third for a 6-0, 5-7, 6-3 victory. It was her seventh straight win, as she has picked up the WTA 125 tournament in Iasi last week. She will be looking to reach her first tour level semifinal of the season on Friday.

Facing Bogdan will be Clara Burel, who knocked out fifth seed Emma Navarro in straight sets. The Frenchwoman, who had beaten Olga Danilović 6-4, 6-4 in the first round, defeated the American 6-3, 6-2 in the second round on Thursday.

Burel, who was a runner-up in Lausanne in 2021, will be playing her third tour level quarterfinal of the season on Friday with hopes of reaching a second semifinal, after her last four finish in Strasbourg.

Bogdan has been in terrific form at the moment. Expect her to keep the momentum going and reach the semifinals. Bogdan to win: 2/3

Alizé Cornet v Diane Parry Preview

Head-to-Head: It will be a first meeting between the two.

Seventh seed Alize Cornet of France won a second straight match in three sets to move into the quarterfinals of the tournament. The world no. 70 defeated local hope Jil Teichmann 6-1, 1-6, 6-4 in the round of 16 on Thursday.

The 33-year-old Frenchwoman had rallied from a set down to beat another Swiss Viktorija Golubic 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 in the opening round. A finalist in Lausanne in 2019, Cornet is playing in the tournament for the second time. Can she reach a second tour level semifinal of the season, following her last four finish in Nottingham?

Facing Cornet will be compatriot Diane Parry, who defeated Danka Kovinić 6-4, 7-5 in the round of 16 on Thursday. The ninth seed had begun her campaign with a 7-5, 2-6, 6-2 victory over fellow French player Fiona Ferro in the first round.

Parry, who won the WTA 125 in Paris and was a semifinalist in Makarska, will be playing in her first tour-level quarterfinal on Friday.

Alizé Cornet v Diane Parry Tip

Cornet is the more experienced player and a former finalist. Expect her to advance to the semifinals. Cornet to win: 4/5

Tamara Zidansek v Anna Bondar Preview

Head-to-Head: Bondar leads 1-0, having won their only meeting at the Budapest 125 quarterfinal last year.

2021 champion Tamara Zidansek is closing in on another final in Lausanne. The 25-year-old world no. 133 made it to the quarterfinal of the tournament with a straight sets win over Sara Sorribes Tormo on Thursday.

The Slovenian player saved 2 of 5 break points and converted 5 of 10 to beat the Spanish player 6-3, 7-5 in the round of 16. She had earlier stunned fourth seed Lucia Bronzetti 6-2, 6-4 in the first round.

Zidansek is 28-18 across levels this year and 15-7 on clay. She will be hoping to reach her second semifinal in a row, following her run to the final four in Iasi Challenger last week. At the tour level, she is yet to reach the last four this year.

Taking on Zidansek will be Hungary’s  Anna Bondar, who knocked out sixth seed Mirra Andreeva 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 in the second round on Thursday. This is the first time that the world no. 155 has reached a quarterfinal at any level this year and she will be hoping to keep the run going.

The 26-year-old had begun her Lausanne challenge with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Aliona Bolsova.

Tamara Zidansek v Anna Bondar Tip

Ziidansek is in better form. She is also a past champion here. Expect her to reach the semifinals. Zidansek to win: 3/4
