Watunuki Hoping for Resurgence in North America

Yosuke Watanuki basically worked his way to the Top 100 after spending some time outside. It was a pretty impressive turnaround from a player who has some strong weapons such as his serve and groundstrokes but lacked consistency.

He now looks to further improve and the North American swing is a pretty great chance for him to do so. He’s 13-6 on hard courts so far this year and that’s half of his 26 wins this year. Recent form has been somewhat shaky as Wimbledon was his last event.

He lost to Alexander Zverev in the second round 4-6 5-7 6-2 2-6 and hasn’t played a match since. He spent a lot of time on North American hard courts so expect a really good effort from him here. He’s also very streaky so that’s a negative but he’s improved in that regard.

The opponent is a very tricky one and he’ll need his best tennis if he hopes to win the match.

Wu Eyeing A Good Run

Yibing Wu is probably one of those players that might have a really strong showing in North America. His only title came on US soil earlier this year and he generally plays really well in these conditions. He had a good run at the US Open last year as well so expect some good showings from him.

The reason why he does so well in these conditions is because he loves to play attack tennis and does it really well. The form can be suspect at times but he just won the UTS Showdown in Los Angeles. After that, he defeated Corentin Moutet in Atlanta 6-3 6-4.

He lost to Taylor Fritz 6-4 7-6(5) in the second round which is interesting as he defeated him at the UTS Shodown days before.

Wu will fancy himself against Watanuki as it’s a matchup that he could win but he’ll need to be careful with the serve of his opponent.

Watanuki v Wu Prediction and Tip

I think that Wu is the better player overall and I think he’ll win the match. The conditions will be brutal so perhaps we’ll see a long one making the over another solid option.

Tips:

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 20.5 games in the match: 5/6
