2021 Finalist Martincova

Two years ago, Martincova reached the final in Prague, eventually losing to compatriot Barbora Krejcikova in straight sets.

Since then her successes have been confined to doubles events – she reached three finals last year, and won her first WTA main tour event in Slovenia, where she was partnered by the Slovenian Marta Kostyuk.

However, that has coincided with a decline in her singles’ form. Having been ranked 40th in the world in February 2022, she has now dropped out of the top 100.

She had a poor European clay court season this year, struggling to win a match, and, although her grass results were marginally better, she was beaten in the first round of Wimbledon.

However, she did find some form playing in a Challenger tournament in France, where she reached the semi-finals, and won her first match at the Poland Open last week, knocking the number five seed, Shuai Zhang, out of the tournament.

Yanina Wickmayer of Belgium then beat her in straight sets.

Knutson Makes Her Main Tour Debut

Knutson is American born, hence her unusual family name for a Czech tennis player.

Now 26 years old, she has enjoyed a fine year in WTA events, reaching five finals, all of them in hard court events.

And she has been three times a winner, picking up the winner’s cheque in tournaments in Canada, Spain and most recently, Portugal.

Now comes the next stage in her career, as she will be making her WTA main draw debut in Prague.

It comes after she beat Greet Minnen of Belgium, the world number 113, and Naiktha Bains of Great Britain, both in straight sets, in the qualifying tournament.

Martincova v Knutson Prediction and Tip

Whilst Martincova has been struggling for form recently she should have far too much experience for an opponent who will be making her WTA main tour debut.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Martincova to win: 1/2
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Under 23.5 games in the match: 4/7
