Wolf Begins Summer Swing On Fire

J.J. Wolf kicked off his North American hard-court swing with a fine run to the last four in Atlanta but was stopped by eventual champion Taylor Fritz in a tight two-setter.

Unlike last year, when it took a while before he got going, last week’s result sets him up for a massive week in Washington.

Wolf was one of the standout performers in Washington at last year’s edition, where he managed some big scalps on his run to the quarterfinal such as beating Denis Shapovalov and Andrey Rublev.

It’s the clearest indication that the Ohio native isn’t in the capital to make up the numbers. Wolf has been a top 50 mainstay throughout the season, tallying a 21-17 record for the season.

The majority of Wolf’s wins this year have been on hard courts where his swashbuckling aggressive tennis just matches up very nicely with the quick, and bouncy surface. With a bye in the first round, he’ll open up against Moldova’s Radu Albot in the second round.

Albot Stuns Giron In Three

Radu Albot pulled off one of the major shocks of day one in Washington, upsetting American World No. 69 Marcos Giron 6-3, 5-7, 7-5 in two hours and 44 minutes of play.

For the first five games, the set stayed on serve, but Albot looked the more likely to get a breakthrough. In the sixth game, he duly took his third break point to move 4-2 up.

The Moldovan would consolidate in each of his next two service games to bag the opening set, which at 39 minutes proved to be the shortest set of the match.

The start of the second set was akin to a seesaw as both players exchanged breaks, but things got tense at the deep end of the set. First Giron saved three break points to hold for 5-4, and moments later he secured his first break of the Albot serve converting on his fourth set point.

Momentum ebbed and flowed either way in the decider which featured six breaks of serve (three apiece) before Albot broke decisively broke for a 6-5 lead. He served for the match to 15.

Wolf v Albot Prediction and Tip

Albot’s win over Giron was shock, but beating an in-form Wolf would be an even bigger shock. We trust the higher-ranked American to make light work of the Moldovan here.

  • Moderate Risk Tip: Wolf to win in straight sets: 4/5
