Evans’ Recent Form is Concerning

World no. 30 Daniel Evans will be making his fifth appearance at the Washington Open. The briton, who had a first round bye, will begin his campaign in the second round on Wednesday.

In his previous appearances in the tournament, Evans was in the round of 16 in 2016, lost in the first round in 2019 and in the second round in 2021. His best came last year, when the 33-year-old went on to reach the quarterfinal.

Evans has struggled big time this season and an 8-18 season record is a proof of that.

The Briton had last won a match in April at the Barcelona Open where he was a semifinalist. He was also a semifinalist in Marrakech, and had reached the third round at the Australian Open. Barring those results there hasn’t been any other notable performance from Evans this year.

Can he get into some rhythm in Washington?

Barrere Sees Off Mochizuki

World no. 59 Gregoire Barrere knocked out Japanese qualifier Shintaro Mochizuki in three sets in the first round on Monday.

The 29-year-old Frenchman saved 6 of 9 break points and converted 6 of 12 to win the two hour and 19 minute contest 6-4, 6-7 (7-9), 6-3. Barrere could have closed out the match in the second set but he missed out on three match points in the tiebreak as the world no. 200 tied the match at one set apiece.

Barrere, however, dominated the final set to improve his season record to 18-16 at the tour level. His best this year saw him reach the semifinals in Eastbourne.

He however won a Challenger title on indoor courts in Quimper. Can the Frenchman build on the start?

Evans v Barrere Prediction and Tip

Barrere is the lower ranked player in this match, but going by how the two have fared this year, he will hold slight edge in the contest. Expect a good contest, with the Frenchman advancing.

Tips:

  • Low Risk Tip: Barrere to win: 4/5
  • Moderate Risk Tip: Over 24.5 games in the match: 5/6
